Fewer seizures thanks to incense
A substance derived from incense trees could be effective against epilepsy, according to researchers at the University of Geneva.
The resin of the Boswellia tree (the source of incense) is traditionally used in spiritual ceremonies, and as a remedy for central nervous system disorders in East Africa. Researchers at the University of Geneva have tested the extracts and individual compounds of the resin in a zebrafish model for epilepsy. This revealed that the strongest anti-seizure effect was shown by b-boswellic acid, which reduced seizures by up to 60 percent. This was confirmed in a mouse model, identifying the active ingredient as a potential anti-seizure agent in vivo.
