The resin of the Boswellia tree (the source of incense) is traditionally used in spiritual ceremonies, and as a remedy for central nervous system disorders in East Africa. Researchers at the University of Geneva have tested the extracts and individual compounds of the resin in a zebrafish model for epilepsy. This revealed that the strongest anti-seizure effect was shown by b-boswellic acid, which reduced seizures by up to 60 percent. This was confirmed in a mouse model, identifying the active ingredient as a potential anti-seizure agent in vivo.
