On the grapevine
Of trigger warnings and patents
Sometimes, respecting private sensibilities can go too far. And sticking to capitalist principles isn’t always best. Some quotes from the world of science.
Elif Özmen, a philosopher at the University of Giessen, runs seminars on philosophy under the National Socialists. In an interview with Der Spiegel, she expressed her anger at a set of guidelines issued by the University of Bonn that instructed lecturers to issue trigger warnings if the content of their courses could be construed as sexist or racist, or if they featured sexualised violence or death (those guidelines have meanwhile been withdrawn again).
Frank Montgomery, the chairman of the World Medical Association, is proposing that the profits of vaccine manufacturers should be used to buy vaccines for poorer countries, rather than simply releasing the patents. He told the newspaper Sonntagsblick: “I am neither a socialist nor a communist. I believe that these companies should make their profits. But why shouldn’t countries siphon off part of them?”
