We can improve our social competence by imitating a role model with whom we can identify. Researchers at the University of Lausanne have tested this, and have observed that people speak better in public if they can first observe themselves as virtual doppelgängers giving a perfect speech. Men with a low degree of self-esteem showed a particular improvement when it was their turn to speak. What remains to be investigated is why it functions less well for women.
